Pilates is a movement system, devised by Joseph Pilates and otherwise known as 'Contrology'. It is a complete coordination of mind, body and spirit.

Pilates is designed to develop core strength and stability, increase flexibility to your spine and body, develop better body awareness and control, helps to tone, lengthen and strengthen the muscles, whilst maximising and maintaining correct alignment and posture.

Through regular practice, Pilates will help you to gain natural grace in your movements that will have positive effects of the way you stand, the way you walk and in the way you perform all daily activities.

Matwork Pilates

At Studio 72 we like to keep the class sizes small to ensure we can give each client the attention required in order to stay safe and gain the most from the exercises. Pilates mats are supplied. These are thicker for comfort, however, feel free to bring your own mat if you prefer!

During the mat based pilates classes, your instructor will guide you through a range of pilates exercises providing you with a full body workout. Small props may be used in the classes, such as, gurdi balls, foam rollers, fit circles, thera bands, poles, therapy balls. Each prop has its own qualities and brings another dimension to your workout. They can be used to help with alignment, to provide increased feedback to the body, to give resistance to an exercise, to assist in an exercise or to increase the challenge of an exercise!

Each client is encouraged to work at their own pace and within their own limits. Adaptations can be given to ensure challenge within your own limitations. Throughout the course of pilates classes, you with become more aware of your own body and what it needs!

Each class finishes with relaxation exercises to reduce tension in the body and the mind and promote a sense of calm and well being.

Pre-natal Pilates

Pilates during pregnancy can help to maintain postural alignment and protect the spine as the body changes and the baby bump grows.

The weight of the baby bump will pull the pelvis and spine out of alignment, often causing pain and discomfort during pregnancy. By focusing on strengthening the pelvic floor, stomach and back muscles, the weight of the baby can be better supported.

Pilates also helps to keep an upright and open posture. This helps increase space internally for the organs, such as the lungs and digestive system, to work more efficiently as space reduces with the ever-growing baby.

Breathing and relaxation exercises in the sessions help prepare for birth and also help mum to focus on the here and now, reduce tensions and stress and allows time for mum and baby to connect.

The movement, breathing and relaxation in the sessions will also have a positive impact on the development of the growing baby!

Post-natal Pilates

Post natal pilates is an effective way to help recovery after pregnancy and labour. It helps to tone, strengthen and realign the body, as well as promoting circulation to aid healing. It also promotes mental well being during what can be a tiring and challenging time.

The classes provide opportunities for mum to develop a positive bond with baby and also to engage with other new mums in a friendly and supportive environment.

At Studio 72, the post natal pilates classes are 'baby friendly' allowing mum to have a work out with out having to worry about childcare or being separated from their baby in the inital stages, especially when feeding. The atmosphere is relaxed and mums are welcome to feed, change, comfort their babies as needed.

The babies also benefit from the social environment of the Studio; engaging with mum and other babies in a different environment, having freedom of movement and exploring on the mats, listening to the relaxing music and visually tracking the movements of the exercises and equiment... or just snoozing in their prams!

In order to ensure hygine for your baby and other clients, please bring a blanket to put on the mat for your baby to lie on.

PILATES CIRCUITS (Higher Intensity Pilates Classes)


Pilates circuits is a 45 minute, higher intensity class involving a circuit of 10 stations, each with a different Pilates exercise and prop for a varied, full body workout.

Each prop and exercise requires the individual to apply their pilates principles and will provide a different challenge, whilst working within their own ability. Previous Pilates experience is essential.

This class is not suitable for those carrying an injury. All mats and equipment are supplied.  Wear trainers and bring a towel!

BODY BLAST (Higher Intensity Pilates)


Body Blast is a 45 minute, higher intensity class using props such as gliders, foam rollers and kettle bells.  

This class is not suitable for those carrying an injury.  All mats and equipment supplied.  wear trainers and bring a towel.

Lynsey Sharp

Lynsey Sharp qualified as a Pilates instructor with the Progressive Pilates Acadamy. She is also a qualified Occupational Therapist, gaining a BSc (hons) OT at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.  Lynsey is also currently training to become a registered Body Control Pilates Teacher.

Lynsey feels strongly that engaging in Pilates can help to improve functional ability and performance in everyday tasks and in sport. By using her experience in analysis of the body, normal movement, bilateral integration and coordination, rhythmic movement therapy, sensory integration and activity analysis, Lynsey strives to help clients become more aware of their body, their posture and their movements.
